Sample Website Package

I got started working with the web with the patient guidance of my dad, Michael Potts (founder of the Caspar Institute -- let's get together & call ourselves an institute!), who helped me get started as a consultant & who continues to teach me well, especially by website example. When one is writing html, each page created becomes part of a library of options for the future, so I was lucky to start with a carefully made set of websites (bits of which are still present on this page). I continue to find inspiration wherever I go & every new project teaches me something fun.

I believe in clean html -- I generally don't get too fancy. I think there are some very exciting new tricks out there & one could come up with a website that was an endless interactive movie, but that has never been my priority (never say never!). I strive to make pages that look good on different setups, to maintain easy navigation, & to include the little details that search engines like so that the site is tempting to list & easy to find. I like a colorful page, speckled with images and plenty of interesting text.

Naturally I like the look of each page to suit its subject (as well as the client in general). I especially enjoy working with authors & owners to achieve this balance.

I believe in links in a big way. I think links are about the greatest thing the web brought to publishing. As Michael says, "Newsflash: this is not paper!" The web is an highly interactive, powerful tool -- both for the user & the creator. I am constantly learning new ways to take advantage of that & try never to limit my sites to a paper design. I generally work for an hourly rate (which varies somewhat according to the client), but I have also been known to work for a project rate when budget is limited but the cause is good. If you don't have a website for your small business -- or even your family travels -- you might be surprised by what we can do for a small amount of money. Recently I've been seeking out small businesses in my hometown & working for trade (Spanish classes & a farm-share). Of course if you have the budget, there are always ways to be more effective in getting your message out there. Creating a website is just the beginning. It's so easy to update there's room for a new delightful feature now & then.

My favorite jobs are the ones which make me feel good about their message, like Heartsong Farm, Stirring the Cauldron, & Canopy Tower (will work for a trip to Panamá). Living sustainably is very important to me & I am proud to say that I use very little paper in my work -- electrons can reach so much farther.
